What You Need to Know About Swollen Gums with Braces

It’s not uncommon for children or teens to experience swollen gums during orthodontic treatment with braces. While this symptom can be alarming for parents, it’s often a normal part of the adjustment process as the teeth begin to shift. The fact of the matter is, braces can make oral hygiene more challenging, and that extra effort can sometimes lead to temporary inflammation. Understanding why gum swelling happens and how to manage it can help ensure a more comfortable and successful treatment journey. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Do Gums Swell with Braces?

Braces work by gently moving the teeth into better alignment, and that movement can irritate the surrounding gum tissue, especially in the early stages. Swollen gums may also result from:

  • Plaque buildup: Brackets and wires create more spaces for food particles and bacteria to hide, which can lead to plaque accumulation along the gum line. If not properly removed, plaque can contribute to early gum disease.
  • Improper brushing or flossing: Kids often struggle to clean around braces efficiently, especially if they’re still learning good oral care habits. Incomplete cleaning can lead to inflammation and puffiness in the gums.
  • Natural response to pressure: As teeth shift, the body reacts to the pressure with an inflammatory response. This is usually mild and temporary, but can still result in noticeable gum swelling.

Tips for Reducing Gum Swelling During Braces Treatment

Good oral hygiene is the most effective way to minimize gum inflammation. Encourage your child to:

  • Brush after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily with special orthodontic flossers or a Waterpik.
  • Stay hydrated to help keep the mouth clean and moist.
  • Avoid sugary or sticky foods that can worsen plaque buildup.
  • Keep up with routine dental care since their dentist can spot issues early on.

Swollen gums can be uncomfortable, but they’re often a manageable part of the orthodontic process. With proper care and regular check-ins, your child’s smile can continue to improve while maintaining healthy gums! Of course, if your child is dealing with persistent gum issues, let their dentist know, as it may be a sign of gum disease.
