It’s not uncommon for children to feel a bit apprehensive about visiting the dentist. However, if your child has Autism, the sharp tools, loud noises, and unfamiliar environment can be especially overwhelming. Since six-month dental checkups and cleanings are an essential part of preserving their oral and overall health, skipping them altogether is simply not an option. With this in mind, keep reading to learn four tips to help any child in need of special needs dentistry feel comfortable.

#1. Learn About the Dentist First

In short, not all dentists are comfortable with or trained in special needs dentistry. So, it’s important to dedicate some time to finding one that is. This will help your child’s visit go more smoothly because they will be able to make special accommodations as needed and know how to help your child feel comfortable. Thanks to the internet, the research process is easier than ever before. In fact, many practices have a dedicated page specifically for parents interested in learning about special needs dentistry!

#2. Play “Going to the Dentist”

Before the actual appointment, it’s a good idea to get your child familiar with the concept of going to the dentist. In addition to showing them educational videos and fun books, try getting some toy dental tools and playing “going to the dentist.” Have them sit in a reclined chair, open their mouth, and say “ahh.” Take turns being the patient so they can participate too!

#3. Prepare Your Child’s Favorite Things

Does your child have a particular flavor of toothpaste they enjoy? A soft blanket that makes them instantly feel calm? A TV show that distracts them time and time again? Bringing along your child’s favorite things to their appointment will help them feel more comfortable.

#4. Stay Close By

Children often feel comfort having their parent nearby, so ask if you can stay in the room while their dentist is checking their teeth and examining their gums. If your child is especially small, they may even be able to sit on your lap throughout the appointment. Do your best to be supportive, keep the mood light, and ask questions as needed.

As a parent, you want nothing more than your child to be happy and healthy. Part of ensuring they can enjoy their food pain-free and communicate clearly is prioritizing their six-month dental checkups and cleanings. After all, their teeth play an instrumental role in their quality of life!
